Pay it Back: Postholiday Blues for Retailers

Hundreds of millions of dollars of credit-card charges are reversed each year, and the peak period occurs in the weeks after Christmas.

Retailers score big over the holidays. But in late December and January, when disputes over purchases spike, it’s time for payback.

According to one analysis, U.S. merchants and credit card issuers can expect to see $980 million in disputed charges reversed in consumers’ favor.

The volume of these postholiday chargebacks is 25% to 35% higher compared with other times of the year, according to Aite Group, a research firm focused on the financial-services industry, which also estimated the chargeback total.
